INFINITE USE OF A FINITE THING
Infinite Use of a Finite Thing is the pioneer project of Hong Kong Soil, funded and supported by Design Trust and commissioned by the Hong Kong Shenzhen Bi-city Biennale (UABB) of Urbanism/Architecture. It is a public demonstrator of reusing excavated soil that is typically dumped in fill banks as stockpile material.
A rammed earth bench emerges as the outcome of material research and experiments with raw earth, placed in the Central Star Ferry Pier as public furniture for the duration of UABB. Its chunkiness and circularity invites a tactile experience - the refined coolness of earth, made durable enough for public interactions of sitting, discussing, resting, and playing. The timber formwork of its construction is exhibited as part of the furniture, with unprocessed soil and aggregates stored within, showcasing the transformation of waste to resource.

“A powerful rethinking of public design—bold yet grounded, experimental yet deeply considered.”
Curatorial Director, UABB, 2024
